2026 Symposium Presenters & Presentations

Christine Williamson, AIA

Assistant Professor of Architecture | Virginia Tech

Christine Williamson is a building scientist and architect who has spent her career discovering why buildings fail and working with owners, architects, and builders to remedy the problems. She is an Assistant Professor of architecture at Virginia Tech and the founder of the Instagram account @BuildingScienceFightClub, an educational project that teaches architects about building science and construction. Christine graduated from Princeton University and received her Master of Architecture from NewSchool of Architecture + Design. She is past chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 1.12, Moisture Management in Buildings and is a frequent lecturer on building science at universities and professional conferences.

PRESENTATION #1: Architectural Risk in Residential and Commercial Construction


In this presentation, we will identify common design approaches to the building systems most vulnerable to failure: roofs, walls, windows, and below-grade construction. We will start with what is, for lack of a better word, normal, and from there we will discuss modest design changes that disproportionately reduce risk at little or no cost. The idea isn’t to eliminate architectural risk altogether, of course, but to understand how any given approach generally compares to standard practice, and to explore what alterations related to aesthetics, performance, and risk are worth considering in the context of a particular project.

As a forensic architect registered in several states, Corey Zussman has practiced in the construction industry for more than 30 years. He specializes in the building envelope, restoration, preservation, life safety, and interior finishes. While working on over 2000 projects, Corey conducts constructability reviews, pre-installation meetings, comprehensive envelope meetings, and construction observations. He has also become known for providing educational opportunities throughout the industry and has produced more than 200 "lessons learned" papers. Topics include building envelope and life safety concerns, enabling Corey to proactively address issues during design review, pre-construction, and construction. In addition, he has over 20 industry articles about building envelope, life safety, and interior topics. He is also a frequent presenter at local and national conferences and associations with over 60 AIA accredited presentations.

 PRESENTATION #2: Understanding Difficult Critical Transitions of AVB Systems


This presentation will identify the many difficult critical transitions on complex building types and will give the tools to better understand the reasoning and sequencing needed to complete the installation in order to prevent constructability issues and potential rework in the field through drawing detailing and correlating construction photos of actual installations and explanations of each condition.

Dir of Sustainability - Assoc Principal | Browning Day

Associate Professor | Ball State University

Daniel is an Associate Principal and Director of Sustainability for Indianapolis-based Browning Day and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Ball State University’s R. Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning. His work focuses on high-performance and zero net energy/zero net carbon building design and construction, environmental systems research, energy/life cycle assessment modeling, and resilient design. Daniel has over twenty years of experience in research, teaching, and practice. He recently co-authored the 14th edition of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings (MEEB) and is currently serving at the Co-Chair of the AIA 2030 Commitment Working Group.

 PRESENTATION #3: LEED v5: Energy, Enclosures, and BECx - relating to Indiana Projects


What LEED v5 BD+C means for building energy performance, enclosure requirements, and building enclosure commissioning for projects in Indiana. A customized presentation specifically for the BEC IN Symposium 2026 event.

Bob Dazel, AIA, CSI, LEED GA

Building Envelope Specialist & Strategic Account Mgr | Tremco CPG Inc.

Robert Dazel has been a registered Architect in the State of Ohio since 1992, a long-standing member of AIA, CSI and maintains his LEED GA credentials.


Under his current role, Business Development Specialist – Facades, Robert serves as a subject matter expert for Tremco’s façade solutions with a primary focus on product line development, promotion, programs and management targeted at national prototype chain accounts and related architecture.


The total of his professional experience as an architect, educator, manufacturer’s representative and consultant has allowed him to become an authority and expert on exterior building envelope performance, code(s) compliance, material testing, compatibility, design, detailing, specification, and solution execution.

 PRESENTATION #4: Understanding EIFS: Composition, Performance, Compliance & above all History


This course provides a comprehensive examination of Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), tracing their evolution from post-World War II European origins to their role as a modern high-performance building enclosure solution. Participants will explore EIFS system components, thermal and moisture management principles, code compliance requirements, fire performance considerations, and the transition from traditional barrier systems to today's drainage-based assemblies. The program also addresses the lessons learned from historical moisture intrusion issues, advancements in building science, and the integration of EIFS with contemporary energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience objectives. Attendees will gain practical knowledge for evaluating, specifying, and detailing EIFS assemblies that support code compliance, occupant comfort, durability, and long-term building performance.
