Friday, June 7


3:00: Check in at Holiday Inn Express in Clarksville, AR


6:00: Gather in Holiday Inn Express lobby for trip to campus for dinner. We will get to know one another and then we will have a conversation and overview about rural and small church ministry in Arkansas, as well as the broader denomination. Led by Phil Blackburn


Saturday, June 8


8:30: Breakfast in our room on campus.


9:00: Devotions in chapel undercroft.


9:30-12:00 Preaching A Sermon: Preaching a sermon can be daunting. In this workshop we will provide you with the basics of sermon writing and structure. Using the book, “Your First Sermon” as a guide, we will walk through the steps you can take to craft a sermon. You will receive a complimentary copy of this book. If you have preached before or never preached, this workshop should help you think through the preaching task. Led by Stewart Smith


12:-1:30: Lunch in our room and a break.


1:30-4:30 Public Speaking and Proclamation: This workshop will give you the basic tools to build a better sermon. We will discuss common public speaking techniques and how to apply them in the pulpit, as well as methods to accept public speaking nerves and turn them into strength. There will also be opportunities to practice these with the other members of the workshop, and help each other become more dynamic, compelling, and effective speakers. Led by Russell Jones

9:00: Devotions in chapel undercroft


9:30-12:00 Officiating at the Lord’s Table: This workshop will combine historical background and theological foundations around the Lord’s Supper alongside practical exercises around officiating. Participants will have both an enhanced understanding of the Sacrament of Communion as well as basic comfort officiating. Stewart will be present to tell you how to gain emergency authorization from the COM to officiate at the table as needed. Led by Phil Blackburn


12:00-1:00: Lunch/Departure

Phil Blackburn is the Director of the Thriving in Rural Ministry program at the University of the Ozarks. He has also been co-pastor of First Presbyterian, Fort Smith, with his wife Tasha, since 2012. Previously he was the pastor of First Presbyterian in Lincoln, IL


Stewart Smith is the General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Arkansas. Stewart served previously as pastor at First Presbyterian in Springdale, AR and associate pastor at First Presbyterian in Fort Smith. 

Russell Jones is a professor of multimedia storytelling for the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, teaching public speaking, communication studies, and media production. He worked for 17 years in news and online media, including five years at KFSM 5News in Fort Smith as a reporter and anchor. His public speaking experience begins at the age of five, when he started telling stories and fables on storytelling circuits in Arkansas. He also applied these skills as a youth leader in the state United Methodist Church and his home church, UMC Dover in Pope County.
