Return To The Grand Canyon. 55 Years Later

By Larry Hayes. A050 Publisher

The Grand Canyon is an ever-changing marvel, always worth another visit.

One of the highlights of our trip was spotting a California condor soaring through the canyon, scanning for food. It was the first time I had ever

seen one in the wild—the largest flying bird in North America, boasting an impressive wingspan of nearly ten feet.

What struck me most about the Grand Canyon was its tranquility. Standing at the edge of this immense chasm, formed over millions (perhaps billions) of years, I felt incredibly small yet deeply connected to the vastness of time and nature.

We stayed at the Bright Angel Lodge, just steps from the rim—an unbeatable location. Each sunrise and sunset painted the sky in breathtaking colors, leaving us in awe.

One morning, my daughter and I took a quiet walk along the rim to the historic El Tovar Hotel, a grand 1905 landmark reminiscent of Yosemite’s Ahwahnee Hotel. Sipping coffee with a view of the canyon was the perfect way to start the day.

February is a good time to go and considered the off-season, meaning fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience.

The Grand Canyon: A Timeless Wonder

The Grand Canyon National Park spans 277 miles, offering not only stunning vistas but also exhilarating hikes for adventure seekers.

The South Rim, open year-round, is the most popular and accessible entrance—just a 3.5-hour drive from the Phoenix Skyport International airport.

Carved by the relentless force of the Colorado River, the canyon is one of the world’s greatest geological wonders. At its deepest, it plunges 6,000 feet, and at its widest, it stretches 18 miles across.

It stands as one of the finest examples of arid-land erosion on Earth—a testament to nature’s artistry over millennia.

To witness the Grand Canyon at sunrise, to feel its ancient stillness and to embrace its sheer magnitude is an unforgettable experience. No matter how many years pass, it remains a place of wonder, reflection and inspiration.
