A version of this photograph was in Rev. George Kenngott's 1912 book The Record of a City: A Social Survey of Lowell Massachusetts. It was captioned "Greek Coffee House, Market Street." No other identifying information is given in the book.

A closer look tells us that there were other businesses in the building as well. And like many buildings of this type at the time, there were also apartments or rooms for residential use.

The words on the glass say "Greek coffee shop The Zappeion”. It was named after the historic Zappeion Hall, a building that was completed in 1888 and built for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Some of the Olympic Games took place within the building at the time. The Zappeion is a large palatial building in the the National Gardens of Athens. It is still used today for meetings and ceremonies. It is surrounded by the Zappeion gardens.

Thank to Maria Booras of Hellenic American Academy for the translation and background information. Hellenic American Academy was founded in1906 and is the oldest Greek American Orthodox day school in the United States.
