How Do You Like Them Apples!

After a COVID-forced hiatus of 14 months, Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary resumed its practice of supplying a team of volunteers to the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano. Led by president Conrad Breece, on May 14 a contingent of 11 assembled in the main warehouse in Concord.

In the recent past, our volunteers were assigned the task of boxing, that is, placing assorted packaged foods into cartons that in turn get delivered to distribution sites for pickup by families in need.

The assignment this day was to sort and bag raw apples – Red Delicious – seven to the bag.

If they passed inspection – any bruise larger than a quarter meant rejection – seven were placed into net bags, then tied, then transferred to an adjacent box. Once full, the boxes were raised by a forklift and moved to an eighteen-wheeler sitting outside the warehouse.

By the end of the two-hour shifts untold hundreds of apples had been sorted and bagged.

The plan is to supply the Food Bank with a dozen or so volunteers one day each month. What gets sorted is pot luck. We sort what we are told to sort. Perhaps next time it is onions or bananas or pears or melons or ….
