Hands-Only CPR Challenge:

Calling All High Schools!

South Metro Fire Rescue is thrilled to announce our Hands-Only CPR Challenge, created for all high schools within our district. At the heart of this initiative is our shared commitment to ensuring every high school student is ready to save a life should the time come. Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be just as effective as conventional CPR, and if performed immediately, can double or even triple the victim's chance of survival.

About 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur inside the home. If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a child, spouse, parent, student or friend.

Why Your Involvement Matters: As trusted educators, principals, and assistants, you hold a unique and influential position in the lives of our young learners. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom, and you have the power to help us spread this initiative like no one else!

Be ready to Save A Life with Hands-Only CPR

Participation in the Challenge is easy!

Here is a quick overview:

STEP 1: Sign up for the challenge by Monday, January 22nd to receive your toolkit from SMFR. These toolkits will be sent to participating schools by Friday, January 26. Inside your toolkit, you'll find instructional videos on Hands-Only CPR as well as a Kahoot! link designed for teachers to use in the classroom, but this is optional and not required for your participation, as our visit will teach the students and faculty everything they need.

STEP 2: Our Hands-Only CPR Month is happening from February 1 to 29. When you receive your toolkit, you will be asked to sign up for a day to have personnel from South Metro Fire Rescue and the South Metro Safety Foundation on-site at your school with CPR mannequins. During lunch, off-periods, or homeroom, students and staff will be asked to find the CPR booth and perform hands-only CPR on mannequins for 1-2 minutes.

STEP 3: SMFR will keep track of how many minutes of CPR is performed during the day we are there, and we will announce the winners in March

The school with the highest total of minutes of Hands-Only CPR

will be our winner!

What's the Prize?

The winning school will receive a trophy personally delivered by your local firefighters as well as an opportunity for the entire school to take photos and explore multiple fire apparatus! It's a fun reward for spreading the message of Hands-Only CPR and actively participating in the challenge.
